Stepping Down

Today will be my last day as administrator and general poobah of this community. I will be finishing my PhD and starting a real job in a few months, and the demands of my dissertation don't afford me the time this board deserves. This will only get worse when I start a job, so it's time for me to st...

Re: Very important!!!! New members must read!!!!

Administrators will not comment publicly on why previously active members have been banned. Additionally, we 1. have limited abilities to edit the php code that runs this board and 2. do this for free on our free time. All good ideas are considered, and implemented when and if possible. If you are c...

Re: Very important!!!! New members must read!!!!

Where does it say that looking here is a must? The only reason I noticed it is because I got lost looking for the new arrivals thread... You should really add a link to this from the "Important: URLs in profiles" thread in the "Standards and Practices" forum until you revert bac...

We're moving

Just an FYI - we should be moving to our own, dedicated host in the next few days or so. This should not result in significant loss of posts, but should resolve the email notification issue, and make us independent of the main site, giving us a certain amount of safety should that site go down. The ...

Re: The New Convert Thread - MAKE YOUR FIRST POST HERE

Guidelines for determining various affiliations by food dislike:

1. Don't like biscuits? You're a communist.
2. Don't like pizza? You're a Nazi.
3. Don't like cheese? You're an alien.
4. Don't like bacon? You're a homicidal lunatic.

Hope that clears up any confusion.

Re: The New Convert Thread - MAKE YOUR FIRST POST HERE

The clarity of the rules in this case is irrelevant because the people being tripped up by this policy do not read the rules in the first place. They never even open the S+P section, because if they did, I bet they'd see in great big text "MAKE YOUR FIRST POST HERE". Do you know how many o...

Plus, if you bring eggs to the appointment and for some reason are disappointed with the service, you can turn your payment into a gooey protest.

Re: Did you hear who died?

Sadly, pancreatic cancer is not the kind of thing one 'pulls through'. The ACS puts 5 year survival at 4%.

Re: What are you reading right now?

Eaters of the dead by Michael Crichton. It's my summer reading assignment. It's kind of based of the concept that most legends are spawned by real events. This one is supposedly the original Beowulf, told from the point of view of an arrab traveler who ended up with a group of viking warriors. A li...

Re: What are you reading right now?

Wow, even when I agree with someone people decide I'm angry. So now I can't share my feelings on a book and agree with another poster, I either have to agree 100% or get into a fight? Never mind, then. aww, it wasnt a fight, it was a debate. Theres no fun in discussing something with someone who ag...

Re: What are you reading right now?

That's funny, I read the HDM series at 28 and thought that it was something that would really appeal to a 13 year old. My reaction was that the first book was excellent, but the second two so horrific as to make it the second biggest literary disappointment of my life. Nothing like a guy acting lik...
