I second the "reading them in order" advice - it isn't necessary, but it adds to the effect.

I watched the PBS show, and recently re-read the book, and every time I can't believe I forgot how totally unpleasant both Heathcliff and Catherine are.

Dickens doesn't help - Miss Havesham gives me nightmares.

I'm reading "Gods, Graves, and Scholars, The Story of Archaeology", by C.W. Ceram. Pretty fascinating.
