The Question of Sauces

Postby Skeptical Skepticism » Fri Jun 23, 2017 4:50 pm

Last night I was confronted with one of the ultimate questions:

The ethics of whether or not canned sauce should be used over homemade sauce.

I searched high and low for the answer, consulting the Gospel and the Loose Canon, but to no avail, as I did not find which is ultimately superior.

What shall I do?

First thing: Leave Nef Yoo alone. To do otherwise might be folly.

Secondly: canned sauce? How much of it is canned? The garlic? The basil? The tomtaoes? The chilli?

I suspect you put too much weight on theology, and not enough on what tastes right. After all, the FSM is a bit of a dick in this regard. Pesto be upon you.

One of the central tenets of Pastafarianism is loose moral standards. Therefore you're not going to get damned if you use canned sauce, or whether you use fresh. It's entirely up to you.

I've been through the Loose Canon and the Gospel myself about this issue, so I just buy canned. Not enough time in the day to make it myself, and Ragu et. al. have had more time than me to figure out what works :drinking:

It's worth remembering that in Italy, one of the most prized varieties of tomato for use in cooking (San Marzano) are specifically grown to be canned.

In this neck of the woods, fresh tomatoes from the supermarket are not grown for flavour, and are pretty rubbish for cooking with. Unless I've got the home grown ones I grow every summer, I always use canned tomatoes to make sauces.
