English isn't much of a language for swearing. When I studied Ancient Greek I was delighted to discover a single word - Rhaphanidosthai - which translates roughly as "Be thou thrust up the fundament with a radish for adultery."

Re: Did you hear who died?
I met him at the Edinburgh Fringe about 15 years ago? Really nice, genuine guy, intelligent and articulate, self-effacing. Turns out he is/was a massive fan of Belle & Sebastian, and I was able to hook him up with a meeting with Stuart and Stevie from the band.
He also had a terrible thirst about him, which seems to be what has done for him, if the word on the street is correct. He had been in hospital recently being treated for cirrhosis.

Ursula K Le Guin, 88
The left Hand of Darkness was truly a monumental work of fiction. I'll have to dig out my old paperback copy and read it again if my wife will just stop chopping all those darn onions.

I was just on my way to post this very story. 'Letters of Note' on Twitter has been running a series of letters she both wrote and received over the years. She was an inspiring lady as well as a fine author.

Re: Did you hear who died?
Mark E. Smith, legendary front man of The Fall. I am sad because he never took the opportunity to tell me my band was shit. It's a badge of honour my contemporaries in Franz Ferdinand, Belle & Sebastian, Primal Scream and Teenage Fanclub all wore. Funnily enough, he liked Thrum, and I thought they were pish.
