Education in service of the greater good

Start New Year brings a sense of energy and purpose, and focus on a new foundation. In the area, we can see that the excitement of bright, ambitious students start a new semester classes.

One of the things I love about the spring semester is that compliance with the birth was killed by civil rights activist Martin Luther King drops near the beginning - that deadline will ensure that we look forward to the New Year, we will remember the lessons of our past.

This year, I am also excited about the first International Day of Education on Thursday 24 january.

Thinking of these two ceremonies together, I am inspired by the important message of Dr. King to education: "The task is to teach a person to think intensively and to think critically Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.".

Difficult to believe, but 265 million children and young people in the world have the opportunity to enter or complete school, according to the information provided by the United Nations Global Education 2019 Poverty, Discrimination, Armed Conflict, Emergencies and Climate Change are just a few of the reasons for this alarming lack of education.

International Day Education was created with the importance of striving for inclusive and fair educational opportunities at all levels. The aim is to ensure that all people have the opportunity to live through learning opportunities, to acquire the knowledge and skills needed in society to the full.

As a breeder and president of Texas A & M University-San Antonio, I see education as a fundamental human right.

Throughout history, the country grants universities and universities such as A & M-S.à. It was very important that the level of education in this country, especially for people with low and middle income countries. The land system is due to the Morrill Act of 1862, which gave states the general areas on the condition that the land is not sold or used for profit and income that is used to create a college that teaches land and mechanical art.

The second Morrill Act, adopted in 1890, provided that the annual appropriations for each state and prohibit racial discrimination in admission schools that received these funds. Morrill laws have been implemented to increase literacy and prevention of sudden child labor times.

Within the University of Texas A & M University System, the country grants the institution, this story is at the heart of A & M-S.A. Existence. We, of course, stretched far beyond the original teaching of agriculture and mechanical art, but the basic value of the public service that was in the middle of the Morrill Act is still in the forefront of A & M and A & M-S.à.

As of now, our 10th year as an independent university, and M-S.à. The aim is to start a science and water program in the fall of technology to solve the area's water problems and prepare students to meet the increasing demand for the workforce in the water industry. Last year, A & M-S.A. He became the first university in Texas to participate in the innovation program at the University's Facebook Cyber Security.

We continue to be a pioneer in innovative educational programs for local school districts, such as mentoring programs are almost equal with students in elementary and teacher education specialties such as early childhood, bilingual education and literacy. These are just a few examples of waved A & M-S.à. Adopting three academic years in university business, science and art, education and human development.
