OMFG HOBBITZ!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0903624/
They are making a live action version of The Hobbit!
There are sure to be more articles, but I can't find anything worth posting.
The Hobbit, for those of you who don't know, is the prequel to the Lord of The Rings, an epic novel* written by J.R.R Tolkien in the 20th century, that in itself is only part of an epic story, the story of Middle-Earth.
I consider The Hobbit to be one of, if not the best, books ever written. I have long wanted to see it done justice in movie form, and now I have that chance.
Sir Ian Murray McKellen reprises his role as Gandalf. Sir Ian Murray McKellen is awesome.
*It is one book, that has been divided into 6 parts, in three volumes.

Peter Jackson won't be allowed to direct it since he had the audacity to sue MGM when they short-dicked him on his money from LOTR. I'm boycotting this movie. I have nothing against Del Toro, in fact I think he'll totally slay as the director. This movie is right up his alley. But MGM is such a sleazy organization I really hate to give them my money.
However, I will re-consider if they get Nick Nolte to do the voice of Smaug. No one else will be sufficient.

Peter Jackson made peace and will, according to a December 2007 press release, be co-producing the 2 Hobbit movies with New Line that is now owned by MGM

LOTR, while still good, was extremely long winded and got a tad boring.
The Movie versions were beyond amazing, when taken as a whole. Boring was kicked out of the equation.
The Hobbit was a far superior work(s?). Not the least bit boring, and filled with quality writing.
To this day, I still read the jubilee edition.
I wonder if the increase in awesomeness will be proportional...
Or, of course, if they will slay that masterwork.

I hope you're on the recieving end of an improbability equation wherein something happens to you that's as unlikely as Rob Schneider winning a best actor Oscar on the same day Michael Jackson single handedly captures Osama Bin Laden. ~ Rainswept

I will personally dip Peter Jackson's penis in lava if he destroys The Hobbit.

The making of two movies to 'transition' to LOTR worries me. Sounds like they are trying to milk it.

You're lying. I don't know why.
It is beyond teh realm of possibility for one such as yourself to have read the Hobbit, and not have enjoyed it in the slightest.
Like the Fundamentalist Christian, I am going to cling blindly to the unlikely chance that you are lying for no reason, and delude myself into continuing to believe that which I believe.
Tolkien is God. End of story.

Everybody's going to jump on my ass for this but I think Tolkien wasn't as good as his stories. His stories were better than his storytelling, as it were. I respect that they weren't written for mass consumption, so I tend to hold back judgement, but I can't bring myself to call him a God, nor keep my peace when another does so.
Asimov is God. Vonnegut is God. Thompson is God. Tolkien is pretty good. Certainly above average. But that's it.

Don't get me wrong. I have respect for Tolkien and I like LoTR, but Hobit was mildly dull.
Perhaps the fact that I read it in Croatian was a major factor.
Also, agreed with Taidje Khan. Asimov is God.

Dude, half the fun is in the way it is written, and the little rhymes Tolkien throws cheerfully at your face. It's much more playful a work than LOTR.
I definitely don't think you'll get an effect half as good in another language (Elvish would be an exception).
Taidje Khan wrote:Anybody who doesn't know how much translation can screw up a story, go read The Illiad as translated by Fitzgerald, then read the translation by Robert Fagles. Good translation is hard as hell to do, even a great writer like Fitzgerald can screw it up.
I think I have Fitzgerald's version. Is the other one superior?
The Iliad really changed my opinion of Troy, the movie, when I noticed that the movie added whole bunches of stuff that weren't there to begin with, and took out some of the coolest heroes (sorry Diomed)...
But I do respect the movie's attempt at realism.
