An analogy "closer to home" might be... stayin' out of the sheep field in tupping season
Every thinking man can see... the very fact that PoN is the top Pyrite in these waters is proof of a certain gayness in the pirate profession.... women feel more comfortable, and achieve, in professions NOT dominated by testosterone and heterosexual sexual competitiveness.

The point, my dear, is that the "Village People" in question are (every last one man-jack of em)... "interesting".
They are a "gathering together" of "interesting" types..... one of the "interesting" sub-groups (types) is "Pirate"
QED
(It's not as if I mind "interesting" people... just sayin' Pirates are.)

"How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, 'This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed'? Instead they say, 'No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.'" - Carl Sagan

And there was Mincing Malachi, the gayest blaggard ever to sail the main. On seeing his frilly pink tops'ls bearing down on them, even really butch captains would hoist up their looming thrums and beat off downwind (to use the technical terminology). Alas, in 1647 he was killed by a 12-pounder handbag fired from the forward carronade of his arch-enemy "Pillow Biter" Rupert McNaughty, Liverpool's strangest buccaneer and part-time dress designer.
Malachi was buried at sea, and they do say as how the flowers was very tasteful.

Explain away the following ten evidences that pirate culture, as a whole, is a thinly veiled cloak for gayness.

as many a frustrated pirate has been heard to exclaim (with feeling)
and I quote,
"Bugger, bugger, BUGGER"
(pirates --- underpants? ---- doubtful ---- let em hang, let em swing - loose and free, as fsm made em)
