Re: Sports
On a less positive note about being British...I went to the Technical Rehearsal of the Olympic Games opening ceremony last night. I enjoyed the show which has been created by none other than Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle. It did rather look like it was going to be a reenactment of 'The Wicker Man' for a while but it turned out to be pretty spectacular.
But the stuff outside the Olympic Stadium is just one big corporate band wagon including a giant 'MacDonalds' and endless adverts for Coca Cola and Visa. What made it worse was the MacDonalds wasn't even open and we had to queue for at least 30 minutes for a beer (£4.60) and another 30 minutes for Fish & Chips (£8.50).
Will someone explain to me how MacDonalds and being super fit go together?
The area around the Olympic Stadium (Stratford...not be confused with Stratford on Avon) is just one big characterless shopping precinct. It's little wonder that we're in the world's greatest credit and banking crisis when you see the Olympic Games being cheapened in this way.

Actually, it doesn't sound like it's being "cheap"ened...

It doesn't go together. However, MacDonalds does go together with looking at super fit people and having a complex over that you can never be as fit as them.

That is interesting. The two first points begs the question why men and women are segregated (I assume). If a woman has the ability to take a place in a major league team, why shouldn't she?

There's a Japanese woman who plays in one of the unaffiliated minor leagues. She's a knuckeball pitcher, a style that requires less brute strength.

Re: Sports
So, where does Spain's performance at these Olympics rank in the all-time upsets/letdowns in international futbol?

Dunno. Their men's judo under 68kg was pretty good though, shame he lost.

The guy who just won -81kg, Kim Jae-Bum of S. Kora, was incredibly dominant. He made the German dude look like an amateur.

With a gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay, Michael Phelps has become the most decorated Olympian ever, surpassing the record of 18 Larisa Latynina set in 1964. Glad he set it with a gold, bronze would've felt kind of "Yeah, you set it, but not in style."

Mexico 3, Japan 1 in men's soccer semi-final. Japan had never been behind in the tournament, and when Mexico went up 2-1, I don't think Japan knew how to handle coming back. Mexico is guaranteed at least a silver, which will be their first ever Olympics medal in soccer.
