I looked at it again and still don't get it. I keep looking for a pattern but there's nothing obvious in either column. After a few minutes it makes my brain hurt and I give up

You're looking for the number that is 4 minus the Euler characteristic. We educated fellows might take our time on this type of problems, but at least we have fancy names for everything.
